They’ll make your house as warm on a windy, zero-degree winter day as they would on a 40-degree day. Of course, this assumes that your home is properly insulated and sealed.

It’s crucial to understand that heat pumps function best when the temperature difference between the warm source (the ground) and the heat sink is minimal.
Depending on where you live, ground temperatures can range from 50 to 75 degrees Fahrenheit. This means that geothermal heat pumps aren’t usually appropriate for normal hot water baseboard applications, which require water temperatures of 180 degrees Fahrenheit. Water temperatures in the range of 95 to 140 degrees Fahrenheit are required for floor heat and low-temperature radiators.
Some newer models come with so-called desuperheaters, which use the compressor’s excess rejected energy to heat the water in your bathtub, shower, and sinks.
Water-to-Air Geothermal Heat Pumps are a type of geothermal heat pump that uses water to heat the air.
When you need air conditioning, these types of ground source heat pumps are usually used. When in air conditioning mode, the ground “water” serves as a heat sink, rejecting heat from the tower. When in heating mode, the compressor extracts energy from the ground water and “pump” it into the “air.” Ductwork distributes the “climate” in your house.
They operate similarly to water-to-water heat pumps in terms of functionality. A geothermal heating and cooling system is also much more efficient than a conventional heating and cooling system.
